Let's practice a little vocabulary!!

Hello everybody!! Welcome to this new post where you will remember what we have seen about animals and you will have the opportunity to practice vocabulary in an entertaining way! 😉

First of all, let see a mind map (click there to make it bigger) to remember the four possibles classification there are:

Now let's go deeper into that. As you well know, animals can be classified into different groups depending on the criteria you use. For example, if we want to classified animals depending on their feeding, what means what they eat, we find:

  • Carnivores: They eat other animals, such as lions!
  • Herbivores: They eat plants, like cows!
  • Omnivores: They eat other animals and plants, just like you!! (Human Beings are omnivores).

However, we can also classify animals depending on how they are born. Let's see some examples:

  • Mammals: They come from their mom's womb. When they are babies, they get milk from their mommy. It means that the baby grow inside their mom, like you and me! 😁 They also have fur or hair, like we do!
  • Oviparous: They come from eggs. Do you remember "Finding Nemo"? Yes, fish are oviparous!

If we pay attention to the animals' bodies, we can observe two main groups:

  • Vertebrate: They have backbones. Do you have bones? Yes, you do! We are vertebrates!
  • Invertebrates: They don't have backbones. All the bugs such as the butterfly or the snail are invertebrate!

Finally, if we try to classify animals depending on where they live, we find:

- Domestic animals: They live at home or on farms. For instance, pets like dogs or cats. But also animals such as pigs!

- Wild animals: They live in freedom. It means that you cannot live with them. Can you imagine yourself living with a tiger or an elephant? I'm sure you can't, because they are wild animals!

Let's see some examples of classifying animals:

1. Dogs: As you know they are carnivores (they eat meat), mammals (they come from their mom's womb and they get milk from her), vertebrates (they have backbones) and domestic (they live at home as a pet).

2. Hakes: They are carnivores (because they eat smaller fish), oviparous (because they come from eggs), vertebrate (they have backbones) and wild (because they live in freedom).

3. Grasshoppers: They are herbivores (they eat plants), oviparous (they come from eggs), invertebrates (they don't have backbones) and wild (they live in freedom).

4. Human Beings: We are omnivores (we can eat salads, hamburgers, pasta, tuna... so we eat everything: other animals and plants), mammals (because we come from our mommy's womb and we get milk from her), vertebrates (we have backbones) and domestic (we live at home!).

I think that some videos would be nice to see more and more examples of animals!! Do you want to watch them??? [The idea here is to watch the videos once and then watch them again commenting the types of animals that appear]

We are almost coming to the end... do you remember the mind map we saw at the beggining of the post? There are some words that are missing, would you be able to complete it? After that, each team will present one type of classification providing examples and pointing the main features of each one. Let's go, be brave! 👊
